About a year ago, the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) of North Carolina began an investigation into Jackson County Sheriff Jimmy Ashe and the method by which his department was conducting vehicle checkpoints. The investigation commenced after multiple complaints were filed alleging that the sheriff's office was coordinating his vehicle checkpoints with federal immigration officers so as to target and arrest undocumented immigrants, in particular immigrants of Latino descent. At one of the vehicle checkpoint locations, where federal immigration officers were present, 15 undocumented immigrants were taken into custody. Following the ACLU's investigation the civil rights group was able to negotiate an agreement with the NC Sheriff that will put an end to such practices. Going forward, vehicle checkpoints in his jurisdiction will no longer be coordinated with Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) or any other federal immigration officers. The ACLU stated that they will continue to monitor the situation.
