The Department of Labor recently issued some interesting statistics as to the current appliactions being processed by the Department's Office of Foreign Labor Certifications. The statistics reflect that over 50% of the total labor certifications processed by teh DOL were applicable to computer and mathematics-based fields. For the first quarter of FY2013, the DOL received 16,724 Applications for Labor Certifications, commonly known as PERM applications. A PERM application is the most common employment-based route that most employers pursue on behalf of their employees to assist these foreign nationals in obtaining permanent residency in the United States.
One of the more interesting statistics is that foreign nationals from India comprised nearly 57% of total applicants; also of interest was that nearly 70% of employers filing labor certifications sought employees with either a Bachelors or Masters degree, an obvious nod to the growing demand for a highly-skilled, professional workforce. Although North Carolina was not listed as one of the top 5 states in terms of demand, the need for skilled workers through the state is undeniable. From high tech firms in RTP to Charlotte's large banking industry and healthcare dominating both the east and west areas of the state, NC's demand for workers is only growing.
