Syria Extended and Re-designated for TPS (Temporary Protected Status)

On 06/17/2013, the US Department of Homeland Security extended and re-designated Syria as a TPS eligible country. This means that those individuals previously granted TPS from Syria can apply for an extension of their temporary protected status for an additional 18 months, from October 1, 2013 through March 31, 2015. For individuals that , and re-designating Syria for TPS for 18 months, effective October 1, 2013 through March 31, 2015. The re-designation of Syria allows additional individuals who have been continuously residing in the United States since June 17, 2013 to obtain TPS, assuming they meet the additional eligibility requirements. DHS' decision to extend and re-designate Syria as TPS-eligible is due to the ongoing armed conflict that has enveloped the nation and has led to a huge flood of refugees leaving the country for safer havens.

TPS provides grantees with employment authorization and prevents removal to the designated country due to DHS determination that return to such a country would pose a serious threat to the personal safety of the granted if they were required to return to their country.
