Diversity Immigrant Visas

Immigration Lawyer in North Carolina

The United States encourages diversity, which is why it is welcoming of all nationalities and races. In fact, the United States Congress mandated the Diversity Immigrant Visa Program to help boost the diversity of immigrants to the country. This program makes up to 55,000 diversity visas (DVs) available each year for foreign nationals of countries with low rates of immigration to the U.S.

Eligibility

In order for an individual to be granted a DV, they must qualify based on education, work, and other requirements. They must have a high school or equivalent education, and they must have a minimum of two years of work experience within the past five years in an occupation that requires at least two years of training or experience. These requirements are mandatory and must be met in order to apply for a diversity visa.

The Diversity Visa Application Process

Applicants for a diversity visa must apply online two years in advance. For example, the application period for the year 2014 began October 2, 2012 and ended on November 3 of the same year. Every year, the list of eligible (and ineligible) countries changes, making it necessary to visit the DV Visa Program's website for application availability and instructions. Once your application is complete and submitted, a specific number of people will be selected through a lottery. The fewer DV visas your country requested in the previous year, the higher your chances of winning become. Regarding application, it is important to keep in mind that there are numerous fraudulent sites claiming to be government sites allowing you to apply for a diversity visa. Only travel.state.gov is a valid website, so be careful as to whom you give your information.
